Imipramine Withdrawal Illness
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I stopped taking imipramine 3 days ago due to unacceptable side effects, which made it not possible to taper the withdrawal (was taking 100mg for 8 weeks prior to cessation). I am having a bad time - nausea, headache, upset stomach, general malaise, vivid dreams and sleepiness. I am struggling to get up and stay awake; I feel so rough... Has anyone had the same experience and can anyone tell me how long I should expect this to go on for please?

My husband takes imipramine to treat retrograde ejaculation not for depression. Now he suffers from ED as a side effect so plz can someone tell me how long it may take to return to normal after stopping the drug and can he stop it immediately without a reduction in dose?

I have been on a high dose of this drug for around 15 years. It is extremely hard to get off of.Very slow withdrawal.I would like to go off of it but it is next to impossible for me.NEVER go cold turkey on this one .A Dr.did that to me once and it was horrible.I will keep trying thought.I would like to know if anyone on a high dosage for years ever got off it permanently?

I'm back on it. I was getting no where talking to my doctor about it. When I felt like my heart was skipping beats, I went back to my one at night. I won't get on another drug before ready up on it. We should be told more up front. I think for every good some drugs do, there are two bads along with it.

Been on this since 1992 50mg at night along with clonazepam 0.5 to help me sleep and deal with degenitive disc disease and central herniated disc and bad hand pain from arthritis in hands with disfigurement of fingers due to it. Ran out of each, first it was with clonazepam and a nightmare. I had to see dr due to regulations in ky. And I was a wreck, mean, couldn't get along with myself. Heart skipping , couldn't sleep and more. Realized I had a problem. Never took more than one at night.
Now I find myself without the meds due to pharmacy mess up of imipramine . Can't believe how down I am, no energy, light headed when getting up and stomach upset. Can't believe how I feel. And was told low dose, I had no worry of becoming hooked, by doctor. Right. BS! Realize I really need the clon. Due to tapering off and very high tempered with dealing with pain. Now this.... Anyone out there able to give me tips on similar problems?

Poor you! I have taken 2 years to reduce from 150mg to 85mg as I have a very understanding doctor. The first week after each reduction is the worst and to help me through this my doc prescribes 12 x 2mg diazepam (no more than that as they are very addictive), I usually take one in the morning then see how the day goes. Couldn't have done it without this tool. I did a drop about once every 3 months to allow my body to adjust. Take it very slowly, imipramine is extremely hard to withdraw from so give yourself time. I know exactly how you feel, it's awful and all so unnecessary if only doctors would help you through that first week. Hope this helps!
