When The "cure" Is The Cause

After two years of hives, facial swelling, inflammation and weight gain, I am cautiously optimistic that I have discovered what has caused the hives. Its been two years of steroid treatments, humiliating hives, pain and major swelling. (Stress also makes the vicious cycle spin).
I went to multiple doctors, (Derm, General, Rhuemotologist, OBGYN - hormones?, and three different allergists). had extensive allergy testing. The results indicated that I was "allergic" to wheat, corn, eggs, mushrooms, almonds etc. I drastically changed my diet to eat only vegetables, fruits, meat proteins and some rice. Even with exercise I was still gaming weight.
During this time I was "treating" my hives and allergic response with "Allegra". I thought it was the wonder drug. I was also taking benedryl at night to calm my skin down.
Finally, I knew it was the last straw. I continued the my diet, started exercising more aggressively, and substituted coffee for green tea. Nothing worked - so Cold Turkey - went off Allegra/ and all antihistimines. I had a terrible withdrawal with intense itching for 3 days. Although I had major itching, I noticed that my hives were starting to go away.
That is when I tried the new "Allegra Cream" for my itchy feet. Within an hour of application, my foot swelled to the point of not being able to walk.
I looked online, and it says there is a "rare" number of incidents with major side effects. I challenge that in a big way. Looking back, it is more clear that the medication I was taking was part of the problem.
There are many parts to finding the answer. I think the drug allergy is the most important, followed by a strict diet and focused exercise program to relieve stress. Green tea is also really helpful with a daily dose of Omega 3 to reduce inflammation.
Good Luck!

Hi, Kim! I'm so glad that you go to the root of your problem.
And the cure causing issues actually occurs more often than most people realize.
There have been many posts on here about it and I've also known it to happen with people I know personally. They start taking one medication, then suffer some new health issue, so they're given another one. Really, what they're treating are the side effects from each, which creates a perpetual circle.
Are you feeling any better, yet?
